There
are three main groups of billiard cue tips: bovine leather tips (professional, triangle, etc), laminated pig leather tips (Moori, DaVinci, etc) and synthetic tips (phenolic for
break).
The cue tip structure is determined by the kind of leather and the tanning.
The main feature of the bovine leather is the thickness, which is much
higher than in the pig one, it is in fact about 7 mm against 1 mm. For
this reason the pig leather is suitable for creating cue tips composed
of different layers not only because it is very thick but also for its
aptitude to keep the chalk.
That’s the way how the “multilayers” cue tips come out.
The first multilayer cue tip can be considered without any doubt the Moori
tip (original Japanese) which is more long-lasting compared to all other
products, above all if bovine, and provides the same performances in time.
The two main problems of a cue tip are the “swell” and the
surface “cementation”: the first one is due to the continuous
shots that press the tip and cause the material’s overflowing; the
second one instead is a characteristic of bovine tips, above all of the
hard ones, on which appears after some shots a shiny coat caused by the
pressure of the tip together with the chalk.
Under this point of view the bovine tips are really unfavourable, both
because they loose much quicker their shapes and because the shiny coat
deeply reduces the friction with the ball increasing trajectory mistakes.
For sure the multilayers cue tips are the best and most favourite products
of billiard players who can count on high performances and on a big shot
effect control despite a more expensive cost.
The hardness level is another characteristic of the multiplayer tips:
S (soft), M (medium), H (hard). Each cue tip is tested after the production
and marked in a different way according to the hardness level.
Multilayer
tips:
DaVinci (pig multilayer – 5 layers): for its characteristics this
cue tip is used on all professional Longoni cues.
Fuji (pig multilayer – 12 layers) : excellent product whose main
aptitude is to keep for a long time the chalk
Kaori (pig multilayer – 8 layers) : suitable for everyone who likes
a very thick tip.
Break It (pig multilayer – 10 layers) : particularly developed for
the break in the pool game
Tiger, Everest, Sniper (pig multilayer): exceptional American products,
particularly developed for the pool
Bovine tips:
Otello (buffalo tip) : a tip made of high selected leather in order to
reach excellent game characteristics.
Professional, Triangle, Triumph (buffalo tip) : American classical tips
of a medium level. Excellent value for money.
Elk Master (bovine leather): the most famous soft cue tip in the world
already with the chalk on it.
Hi-Chrome (bovine leather) : medium tip with Chrome tanning
Synthetic tips:
Phenolic: completely synthetic tip suitable for pool break cues
